Trips leave daily from Las Vegas, NV, and fly throughout the day. If you're planning a Sin City vacation, you've got to add one of these helicopter rides to your list of things to do. The West Rim

This part of the canyon is 120 miles from Las Vegas. Helicopters make the flight in 45 minutes. The rim is located entirely on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. This includes the bottom, where you'll be assisted to and from the chopper by the locals. The Skywalk, in fact, is a joint venture between the tribe and a Chinese businessman from Las Vegas.

Points of interest on top of the rim include the Glass Bridge, Guano Point, Eagle Point, Hualapai Ranch and the Indian Cultural Center. The bottom is home to the Colorado River, which is located a mere 5 minutes from the helipad, and is situated between two of the canyon's stunning red-sandstone cliffs.

All-Inclusive, Baby!

The only thing you need to bring on these flights is your sense of adventure. Each package comes with everything you need to get airborne, including:

  1. Free hotel shuttle pick up and drop off. Be ready at least 1.5 hours prior to your scheduled departure.
  2. Lunch. Ranges from a Champagne picnic to a tasty BBQ sit-down.
  3. Guide. Pilots double as guides on bottom tours. Rim-top and rafting tours feature a local expert.

Also, depending on when you fly, remember to dress accordingly and bring water, ChapStick, a hat and sunglasses.

When to RSVP

There's a lot of debate about when to purchase a helicopter tour. My rule of thumb is do it no less than 3 days from your desired date. More is always better. Helicopter rides are extremely popular and regularly sell out. People seem to think that booking these trips in Las Vegas will result in a discount. No true. You will end up paying more, especially if there are two or more of you. Only solo flyers have a shot at getting a same-day booking, and even that's a crapshoot.
