Las Vegas Day Trips: Take a Quick Helicopter Ride to Skywalk Grand Canyon

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The word’s out: The Skywalk Grand Canyon is Las Vegas’ hottest outdoor attraction. The best way to experience it? By helicopter, of course.

Flights depart from Las Vegas and reach the Skywalk in 45 minutes. En route, you’ll fly over Lake Mead, the largest man-made reservoir in the U.S., and Hoover Dam, which now includes the spectacular Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Before you know it, there it is: The Grand Canyon Skywalk, glittering like a diamond under the bright desert sun.

Keep that camera clicking – at this point the awesome descent starts. Airborne, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of Eagle Point and Guano Point, the Colorado River, and the Grand Canyon’s breathtaking skyline before descending to the airstrip at Grand Canyon West.

The “glass bridge” is a modern-day marvel of civil engineering. The cantilevered walkway extends 70 feet past the edge and suspends guests 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. The bridge is strong and can hold up to 71 fully loaded 747 jumbo jets. It can also withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 on the Richter Scale. Built to support up to 800 people, the Skywalk’s maximum occupancy is 120.

The deck is comprised of 46 glass panels that cost $250,000 each. If you drop a phone or a camera it will scratch the glass, which is why personal electronics are banned. You are also required to put cloth booties over your shoes. Photographers are available to take your picture, and there are mounted cameras on the guardrails.

There are two types of Skywalk Grand Canyon helicopter tours from Las Vegas. The air-only tour takes you over Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, and the Skywalk before going back to Las Vegas. Total tour time is 3.5 hours. The other lands and includes VIP Skywalk tickets and lunch. This trip lasts 6.5 hours. All tours come with free pick up and drop off at most major Las Vegas Strip hotel-resorts.

These helicopter flights are safe, comfortable, and fun. Most tour operators use the EcoStar 130, a fantastic aircraft that features a cabin 25% larger than conventional helicopters. This extra space permits stadium-style seating and huge 180-degree wraparound windows. They also come equipped with two-way digital communication systems and a pre-recorded narration translated into more than 10 languages.

These helicopter tours can be extremely cheap. The best prices are on the Internet. I recommend purchasing direct from the tour operator. Not only will you get the cheapest price but your reservation will be confirmed on the spot. This lets you dodge any “day of” reschedulings. Which reminds me: Never book when you arrive in Las Vegas. These tours sell out. Always book in advance.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a spectacular event. To do it right, take a helicopter tour from Las Vegas. These helicopters fly at a lower altitude than airplanes, which gives you the fantastic aerial views when you hover over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and the Skywalk. Plus, they’re fast, reaching speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. If it all sounds over the top, it is. Which is exactly how you should remember your Grand Canyon Skywalk experience.

Is it best to prearrange a tour of the Grand Canyon, or can we get one whilst there?

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

We are looking at travelling to the Grand Canyon in Mid April, whilst staying in Las Vegas. Is it better to self drive or get an organised trip.
We do want to see the Skywalk and also helicopter to the floor?
Thanks everyone

Uh No You really don’t want to see Skywalk …ever
If you want a great and free view 467′ down to the River try this one from the center of the old Navajo Bridge [it's on the left]

http://www.nps.gov/glca/historyculture/navajobridge.htm

There is a huge No -Fly Zone over all of GCNP among the rules governing that NFZ are rules that prohibit flying below the Rims of the Canyon or landing anywhere with GCNP [ unless on official business like S&R]
Helo tour companies circumvent that rule by legally landing down River on the Hulapai Indian Reservation. The problem is that by the time that you get down there most of the classic GCN rock formations are long gone .
Do yourself two favors
1) rent a car with room and HP
2) Take some time and pick your way thru all of my Grand Canyon answers and if you run into a guy named Sascoaz you should pick thru his great answers too

Grand Canyon – Air tour?

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Grand canyon sight seeing by helicopter – how much it costs? Which is the good place to start the journey to have some good views?

Planes and helicopters are NOT allowed to fly over the GC except at the indian reservation. (The part of the GC that is most advertised, is on an Indian Reservation at the extreme West of the canyon.)
Besides If you want to see the real Grand Canyon go to the South Rim of the park. You can take a bus tour but it is best to drive. There are really lots of places that you can see easily on way to the South Rim. Lake Mead http://vegasnature.com/LakeMead.htm Hoover Dam http://vegasnature.com/HooverDam.htm Colorado River http://vegasnature.com/ColoradoRiver.htm Oatman http://vegasnature.com/Oatman.htm Grand Canyon http://vegasnature.com/GrandCanyon.htm on the way back stop in Laughlin http://vegasnature.com/Laughlin.htm http://www.vegasnature.com/ has videos of each area followed by maps showing how to get there

Grand Canyon Overnight Ranch Tour – return to Vegas?

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I have booked an overnight stay at the Grand Canyon West ranch with helicopter flights there and back with Heli USA. Has anyone else done this trip? What sort of time did you get back to Vegas? – We only really have the second day to look around Vegas so need an idea so I can plan the best use of the day.

Thanks

Try and catch the Freemont Street experience after dark, it’s quite unique. Also, the dancing fountains outside the Bellagio. Use the monorail to travel the strip, Mon Ami Gabi restaurant in Paris Casino is a lovely place to have dinner.

Grand Canyon West video, pictures and stuff

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Here is video.

You can see a helicopter in the distance… we were too poor to go on it.

in any case… the sun set so I stopped taping stuff…

By the way… I don’t have this on tape but on the way home, watch out for cows just randomly wandering in the road. The road is so monotonous and boring that you don’t expect to see something like that right in front of you…

What is the best tour company for sightseeing over the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas??

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I will be taking a trip to Vegas in March, and want to take either a helicopter or airplane flight tour over the Grand Canyon, and was wondering what companies to trust, which to avoid, and what part of the canyon would be best for sightseeing(west or south rims)???

IMHO Maverick is the best, but what I will do is give you the information on several and let you decide which is the best for you.

Maverick – 702-261-0007 or 1-866-644-8687
http://www.maverickhelicopter.com >they are located near McCarran airport, on LV Blvd(the strip)

LV Tour and Travel – 702-739-8975 – or

LV Helicopters – 702-736-0013

http://www.lvhelicopters.com

All American adventure tours – 702-631-3091

Best Tours – 702-851-8436

Sightseeing Tours unlimited – 702-471-7155

The advantage of a helicopter tour is that they can land at the bottom of the canyon. The GC is a beautiful sight from above, but it is an awesome sight from the river.
